Pupil Premium

Introduction to the Pupil Premium

The pupil premium was introduced by the government in April 2011. It was designed to give additional money to support schools in raising the attainment of children who receive free school meals and those children in local authority care or from a family serving in our forces. These groups of children have been identified nationally as achieving at a lower level than children from less disadvantaged backgrounds.

For the academic year 2016-17 Pupil Premium is £1320 per pupil. In 2012-13 the government decided that eligibility for the pupil premium would be extended to pupils who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the preceding 6 years.

Children from families currently in the services are eligible under the Pupil Premium for £300.

The funding is given to schools to spend as they think best, although there is a requirement to publish online how this money is

Please contact the school office if you feel your family is eligible for Pupil Premium Funding. This form can either be sent direct to the Education Welfare Office or to the school office but in either case will be dealt with sensitively.

The Pupil Premium at Willington

At Willington we are committed to ensuring all our children make the best possible progress. We track the achievements of every child on a regular basis and do all we can to make sure each child achieves his/her potential. We also have a duty to ensure that no group of children are disadvantaged due to their gender, ethnic origin, family income or background.

Children in all year groups learn in classes where the staff team includes a teacher and a teaching assistant. At different times of the day/week children of all abilities are familiar with working in groups of different sizes and with different adults. Children in need of additional support for their learning have the opportunity to work on a 1:1 basis of in a small group with an adult or access targeted resources including ICT equipment and related software.

The Pupil Premium has allowed us to continue and extend what we already do – to monitor children’s progress and to give additional support when required. Children are certainly not singled out or stigmatised for getting some extra attention and we would never publicly identify a child in front of other children for being in receipt of Pupil Premium

How Can You Help?

If you think your child may possibly be eligible for pupil premium funding / free school meals, even if you do not want your child to eat school meals, please contact Sharon Bateman or Cathy Dutton in the office.

Every child who is registered as eligible for pupil premium generates valuable income for the school and this eligibility will help you access financial assistance with school costs such as trips, clubs and music tuition. Thank you.
